What Is Relactation?

Relactation is the process of starting breastfeeding again after you’ve previously stopped. This can happen whether you weaned days, weeks, months, or even years ago. People might choose to relactate because they stopped earlier than they wanted to, were separated from their baby, experienced health challenges, or have adopted a baby and wish to build a milk supply for them.

At its core, relactation is about re-stimulating your body’s milk production. Milk supply works on a “supply and demand” principle — the more often the breasts are emptied and stimulated, the more milk the body is signaled to make.
